​US and Chinese forces join hunt for AirAsia QZ8501, search moves south

Two of the world’s largest military powers are lending their resources to the effort to find AirAsia QZ8501, which has been missing since early Sunday morning.

The USS Sampson, a destroyer class warship in the US Navy, was sent to aid in search efforts today. According to San Diego 6, US Navy officials are working with Indonesian authorities to determine whether any other U.S. surface or airborne assets would be helpful in the search. 

According to China’s official Xinhua news agency, China is sending a navy frigate and aircraft to aid ongoing search operations by Indonesian, Singaporean, Malaysian and Australian military and civil authorities.

More than 1,100 people are involved in the search for the missing plane with 162 passengers onboard, but they are scouring an area larger than 11,000 square nautical miles of ocean floor, Efforts were originally centered around Belitung but Channel News Asia reports that officals are now saying the search has moved further south.
