Gibran Rakabuming Raka (right) is real!
He’s nowhere near as cute as Sasha and Malia Obama, but the least Gibran Rakabuming Raka could do is fake a smile on this momentous day for his father, President Joko Widodo.
Jokowi’s eldest son has thus far shied away from the media limelight. His public appearance today was his first ever since Jokowi was nominated for president this year. Only his siblings, Kaesang Pangarep and Kahyang Ayu, were occasionally spotted at Jokowi’s presidential campaign events.
But when Jokowi finally introduced his eldest son to the media this morning, Gibran looked somewhat hostile and unwelcoming.
“This is Gibran Rakabuming Raka, my eldest son. He’s rarely seen in public,” said Jokowi at the Jakarta governor’s mansion in Menteng.
But perhaps Gibran has his reasons for staying away from the public eye?
“I work. If I were unemployed then I’d follow my father around” said Gibran coldly to journalists who questioned his lack of appearances.
“And there was one media outlet that said I was the bastard child [of Jokowi] because I was never seen during the presidential campaigns,” Gibran continued.
Jokowi quickly calmed down his son, telling him to ignore those irresponsible media outlets.
We doubt we’ll be seeing much of Gibran after today, even with Jokowi as president. In all likelihood, he was probably dragged along to his father’s inauguration today against his will.
