Titi Supardi, an Indonesian woman living in Dili, East Timor, went through with a vow to shave her head bald if Joko Widodo became president, a promise she went through today after Jokowi was sworn in as our new leader.
But Titi didn’t shave her head because she was upset Jokowi won the election. Quite the opposite. “I made my vow so that Prabowo [Subianto] would not become president,” Titi told PortalKBR.
Titi is a former journalist, who, during the New Order era, joined the organization Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI). When some members of AJI were imprisoned, Titi took it upon herself to take care of those in prison.
After the end of the New Order, Titi spent more time in East Timor. Her passion as an activist led her to become a social worker in the area.
According to Titi, the experience of living in Indonesia under the New Order regime caused her to worry that the country could return to authoritarian rule. During the presidential campaign period, she was particularly worried that Prabowo, with his poor track record of human rights violations, which includes the abduction of activists, could become the president.
So Titi vowed that if Jokowi won and Prabowo lost, she would shave her head. Admiring her newly shaven head, Titi smiled and said, “I’m glad Prabowo was not elected.”
So are we! Thank you Titi, your sacred shaving vow might have made all the difference – plus we think you totally rock the shaved head look!
