Ultimate no more: Soekarno-Hatta’s new terminal is going to be called just Terminal 3

As silly as it sounds, we’ve always liked that Soekarno-Hatta’s new grand terminal was going to be called Terminal 3 Ultimate, as if it was the latest version of a fighting game that has all the extra features the ordinary version is missing.

Sadly, airport authority PT Angkasa Pura II announced that the word “Ultimate” has been officially struck off the name of the new terminal following criticism.

“Now, we can confirm that at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport there are only Terminals 1, 2, and 3. If there’s a newer terminal built, it would be called Terminal 4,” wrote PT Angkasa Pura II Corporate and Law Secretary Agus Haryadi in a press release, as picked up by Antara yesterday.

Haryadi explained that the previously named Terminal 3 Ultimate will from now on be called just Terminal 3, as it is considered an extension of the existing Terminal 3.

Previously, House member Mustafa Kamal criticized the use of an English word in the name of an Indonesian airport terminal, which would’ve been contradictory to Indonesian law requiring Bahasa Indonesia to be used in official capacities.

“If we don’t assert [this law] from early on, then the use of foreign languages can outnumber that of Bahasa Indonesia. Would we name the Parliament building using a foreign language? It would be like Indonesia is not the host of its own home,” Mustafa said on Monday.

While we share this concern, we hope that eventually there will be some distinction between the names of the existing Terminal 3 and the new terminal, considering that they are two separate buildings. Something as simple as Terminal 3A and 3B or Terminal 3 Baru (New) for the new terminal should suffice.

The new terminal was supposed to begin partial operations on June 20, but its official opening was postponed to an unspecified date after the Transportation Ministry declined to issue its operational clearance due to safety concerns.
