Well, that’s anti-climactic.
After previously announcing a June 20th opening, it looks like we won’t be flying into or out of Soekarno-Hatta airport’s brand-spanking new and shiny Terminal 3 Ultimate for some time yet.
The Transportation Ministry yesterday announced that the terminal’s opening will be postponed after it failed to meet some requirements during some trial runs.
“It’s postponed for a while until [the terminal] meets requirements of safety, comfort and service,” said the ministry’s Airport Director Yudhi Sari Sitompul, as quoted by Kompas.
The ministry cited faulty back-up electricity generators as one of the issues that need to be fixed before the terminal is open for use.
There has been no specific new date set by the ministry for the opening of the terminal, and there is no word if it’ll be ready in time for the busy Lebaran season in early July.
Garuda Indonesia previously announced plans to move all of its operations to Terminal 3 Ultimate as soon as it opens, but there have been no reports since of other airlines planning to follow suit. The terminal, which is planned to be fully operational by the end of this year, will have the capacity to support 25 million passengers per year. By comparison, the current existing terminals 1, 2, and 3 only have the capacity to support 22 million passengers per year, which is way below the average of 60 million passengers passing through Soekarno Hatta each year.
