Go-Jek’s new car hailing service Go-Car is now available with latest app update

Have you updated your Go-Jek app today? If so, you’ll notice that in addition to an updated user interface, a new service called Go-Car is now available.

We previously reported that Go-Car would be a service like GrabTaxi where users can order conventional taxis through the app. However, Kompas Tekno is today reporting that Go-Car is more like Uber and GrabCar, meaning that it’s likely to employ partner drivers in private cars instead of conventional taxis.

Whatever the case, we had to put Go-Car through our price test. The result? Go-Car might just be the most expensive car-hailing service in town.

We tried to get fare estimates for Go-Car, UberX, and GrabCar from Plaza Senayan to Grand Indonesia this afternoon. With Go-Car, the fare was Rp 34K.

GrabCar was substantially cheaper, charging Rp 24K for the same route and the same time. UberX was cheaper still, with the fare estimated at Rp 17-22K. However, it’s important to note that surge pricing didn’t apply for any of the apps at the time of the test.

With such a higher fare than its competitors, one might suspect that Go-Car isn’t heavily subsidizing their drivers like the others. Or, since the fare isn’t too far off from regular taxi fares, perhaps Kompas Tekno got it wrong and Go-Car is actually a taxi hailing app like it was previously suggested. We’ll know for sure once we get an official statement from the company.
