Ahmad Dhani says Indonesia is not the land of Ahok’s ancestors in racist dig at Jakarta governor

Musician Ahmad Dhani has said some pretty incredible things (as in, it’s incredible that some people still take him seriously) as he continues his bid to become Jakarta governor in 2017. While we sort of expected this from him, it’s still pretty unbelievable that he has already stooped so low to play the race card against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

Dhani called a press conference at his Pondok Indah home yesterday to show his appreciation to Indonesians, like himself, who are trying to take Jakarta back from the likes of Ahok, who is of Chinese descent.

“They are the nation’s citizens who don’t want the archipelago to fall into foreign control. You are descendants of Majapahit, Mataram. So the Indonesian archipelago is inherited from our ancestors, not Ahok’s ancestors,” Dhani said, as quoted by Tempo.

We have of course heard of this kind of racist argument against Ahok before, mainly from hardline “Islamic” groups like the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). Shouldn’t we expect better from someone who’s aspiring to become a governor of a city-province with the population of 10 million?

Well, not if that person is Ahmad Dhani. After all – and we never tire of reminding people of this – he did dress up in a Nazi SS uniform for a music video once.
