So as we mentioned to you before, the Ragunan Zoo got a very special gift for 70th Independence Day yesterday – a pair of giraffes from the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia.

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama inaugurated the giraffes’ new enclosure when they arrived and was given the honor of naming the two longnecks from down under.

In the spirit of the day, Ahok decided to name the Aussie giraffes “Dirgah” and “Ayuri 70,” which most of you probably realize is a play on the phrase “Dirgahayu RI” (Love live the Republic of Indonesia).

“(The President and CEO of Indosat, Alexander Rusli) and I agreed that the male giraffe should be named ‘Dirgah,’ using the letter H, because if you do not use the letter H, a lot of people would scold us because a lot of people are named Dirga,” Ahok said jokingly, as quoted by Kompas. Indosat helped pay to transport the giraffes to Indonesia.

The pair of giraffes was given as a symbol of the Sister Province Cooperation between the provincial governments of Jakarta and New South Wales. Ragunan Zoo will also be loaning some animals to the Taronga Zoo.
