Slurp! More than 100,000 bowls of mie bakso to be given away for free at Jokowi’s inauguration

If you are brave enough to wade through the sea of people that are sure to be at Jokowi’s inauguration next Monday, know that your efforts will not be in vain – there’s a steaming bowl of meatballs and noodles waiting for you amongst the mobs.

Hundreds of mie bakso kaki limas from the Association of Mie and Bakso Vendors (APMISO) will be giving away their dishes for free to celebrate Jokowi’s rise to the presidency.

“This isn’t a donation to Jokowi, this is purely for the people who want to join in on the celebrations,” said event coordinator Chrisna Murti on Wednesday.

At the moment, there are 850 bakso and mie ayam carts ready to spread the stretch of road from Bunderan HI to Monumen Nasional (Monas). They are planning on donating 112,000 portions of their product for people at the inauguration.

In addition, ketoprak vendors will donating around 7,000 portions, whereas siomay vendors will be pitching in with 5,000 portions. There will also be volunteers giving away free drinks and snacks.

Event organizers are hoping a donation of free food of this magnitude will get them into the Indonesian record books. Though there is still time for the event to get even larger, as people can still pledge to donate more food and beverages before next Monday.

This actually might have convinced us to face the hordes in order to attend Jokowi’s inauguration. After all, we can’t call ourselves Indonesian if we decline free mie bakso.
