Mobile phone technician beaten up over misunderstanding of the sentence “let me put it in for you”

Sticks and stones may break one’s bones, but words can cause a lot of pain too, as one very unlucky man in Surabaya recently found out.

A mobile phone technician, identified as RF (25), became the victim of assault due to an extremely unfortunate misunderstanding.

Yesterday, police say that after RF fixed a mobile phone for a customer, identified as AMR, he said, “let me put it in for you”.

The “it” that RF was referring to was AMR’s SIM card, which the technician wanted to insert into the phone.

Mistaking RF’s words to be sexually suggestive, AMR called for his driver and the two physically attacked the mobile phone technician.

“The driver told the victim to apologize, but the victim refused because he didn’t think he had done  anything wrong,” said Commissioner Bayu Indra Wiguno, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at the Surabaya Police, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

The driver then called five more of his friends – described as large, well built men by Kompas – and they all joined in to gang up on RF. The extent of the injuries RF received was not revealed.

After the assailants were all gone, RF reported the incident to the police. Soon after, all seven were arrested, each of them could be charged with battery and may face up to 7 years in prison.
