Massive fire at Pasar Senen in Central Jakarta, 56 firetrucks called in to battle the blaze

Pasar Senen, one of the oldest markets in Jakarta, has been the site of a massive blaze this morning with firefighters still working to control the conflagration.

The fire reportedly began this morning at about 4:45 am and is mainly located in Blok II of the market complex. The fire is believed to have started on the 1st floor but spread quickly all the way up to the 3rd floor.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. Firefighters were still attempting to put out the blaze as of 10:45 am.

Subejo, the head of Jakarta’s Fire Department, said that the large number of highly-flammable items in the market caused the fire to spread quickly and would make it difficult to put out. He also said a large amount of water and foam would be required to make sure the fire was out for good and would not flare up again.

Although the police and firefighters have not yet investigated the cause of the fire, Acting Governor Sumarsono speculated that it was due to a short circuit or some other electrical problem caused by carelessness.
