Mini-market manager busted for stealing Rp 94 million from his own store by staging a fake robbery

Convenience store robberies are unfortunately not so unusual. Neither is employees stealing from their workplaces. But it takes a rare combination of ingenuity and desperation to drive somebody to come up with a scheme like this…

As the assistant chief at his Alfamart convenience store in Limo, Depok City, 23-year-old Usep Saepullah often worked the late night/early morning shift all by himself. On Tuesday, January 3, Usep was found by several of his store’s employees at 6 am with his hands chained together, a sweater tied over his face and the store’s safe completely emptied out by supposed robbers.

According to Usep, the robbers had been smart enough to get rid of the CCTV camera footage before forcing him to open up the store’s safe and give them all Rp 94 million in cash being stored there.

But police found certain discrepancies in Usep’s testimony that led them to believe he might be more than just the victim of a robbery.

It turned out that police were correct – they later searched Usep’s house and found Rp 65 million of the stolen cash as well as other evidence of the Alfamart employee’s true crime, including the CD from the store’s CCTV security system.

“That is when the suspect admitted what he had done,” said Depok Police Assistant Commissioner Firdaus as quoted by Tribunnews.

Polce say Usep did indeed attempt the fake robbery scheme due to financial desperation. He is now facing grand larceny charges and up to five years in prison for his crime.
