Thamrin-Sudirman will be closed for a Car Free Night of entertainment on New Year’s Eve

Closing the main thoroughfares of Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin off from traffic has been a New Year’s Eve tradition in Jakarta for a while, but last year the government decided to not set up entertainment stages throughout the area as they had done in the past, instead encouraging people to head to Ancol for festivities.

But it seems Acting Jakarta Governor Sumarsono (who is filling in for Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama while he is legally mandated to take leave during the campaign season) has decided to bring entertainment back to the main streets of downtown announcing that the government would be setting up four entertainment stages across Thamrin-Sudirman this December 31.

“There will be folk entertainment, a traditional arts stage, and whatever else the organizers can plan, there are no special instructions,” Sumarsono said on Tuesday as quoted by Kompas

The plan is for entertainment stages to be set up near the National Monument (Monas) in front of the Mandarin Hotel in Bundaran HI, in front of fX mall and one in front of the entrance to Jalan Bendungan Hilir, although Sumarsono said the location of the stages may change depending on the conditions.

According to the acting governor, Car Free Night along Thamrin-Sudirman will last from 5pm on Saturday, Dec 31, until 2 am on Sunday.

He also said that the usual Car Free Sunday that takes place on Thamrin-Sudirman would be cancelled on New Year’s Day due to its proximity to the Car Free Night program.
