Although ride-hailing services take numerous precautions, such as doing thorough background checks, to make sure their drivers are safe and reliable individuals, given that they work with thousands of “partners” it’s not surprising that some less-than-one-star drivers slip through the cracks.
This one might just be the scariest.
A Facebook user by the name of Vanny Afrillia on Saturday posted a video of her Go-Car ride from hell, which has gone viral on social media and led Go-Jek, which operates the Go-Car service, to publicly apologize for the incident.
According to Vanny, she ordered the Go-Car to travel from West to East Jakarta the previous afternoon. From the outset, the driver drove recklessly and used the sirens on his dashboard (which are available to purchase and use by civilians in Indonesia, go figure) to help clear his way through traffic.
Vanny said the ride went from bad to worse as the driver shouted profanities like “ANJING!” towards motorists who were in his way. As if that wasn’t enough, the driver pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and placed it in front of him on the dashboard, as seen in the video above.
In the post, Vanny said that her 8-year-old sibling was in the car with her. When she told the driver to take it easy because she wasn’t in a rush, the driver apparently replied, “I’m the one who’s in a hurry!”
Go-Jek’s PR Manager, Rindu Widuri Ragilia, confirmed the incident, but denied that the Go-Car driver was carrying a live firearm.
“It wasn’t a firearm. It was a lighter (shaped like a gun),” Rindu told Detik today.
That said, Go-Jek received the complaint from Vanny and they have terminated their working relationship with the driver. There are no reports yet on whether the authorities have been notified about the incident.
