Early this year, plenty of folks were overjoyed to learn that Netflix had come to Indonesia (and most of the rest of the world). People were also super excited in June to hear that online retail giant Amazon had plans to enter the Indonesian market.
Well, Amazon entered the Indonesian market today, but not with its vaunted online store. Rather, Indonesia is now among the more 200 countries that can stream from Amazon Prime Video, the company’s own answer to Netflix.
While perhaps not nearly as exciting as getting access to Amazon’s vast repository of products, the company’s video service has actually been around since 2006 and has grown to be one of Netflix’s biggest competitors in the United States. Just like Netflix, Amazon has spent a ton of money developing numerous original shows for their service, and while they haven’t had hits as popular as Netflix’s biggest series like “House of Cards” and “Stranger Things”, Amazon has produced several critically acclaimed exclusive such as “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Transparent” (which has won an Emmy and several Golden Globes).
Based on a cursory glance of its currently available content, Amazon’s initial offerings in Indonesia still seem to lag behind Netflix’s increasingly extensive local lineup.
