Why Brisbane rocks, told through 5 must-eat burgers

Brisbane is a riverside city with a laid back soul and a beach bum spirit. Skyscrapers soar in the Central Business District, there are museums and art galleries galore, and world-famous surfing spots are just a short drive away. This dynamic mix results in some of the most unique food in the country, and what better food is there than burgers? That’s right, we can’t think of a more appropriate way to experience just how cool Brisbane is, than by eating your way through the city’s humble hamburgers. Here are five meaty creations that provide a window into the city’s local culture.

Miel Container

Albert St & Mary St, Brisbane City QLD 4000

Brisbane embraces independent spirits. Whether you want to surf all day, dye your hair pink or start your own business, in Brisbane you won’t be judged. The answer to burger rule-breaking is at Miel Burger, where you build your own creation. There’s no limit on what you put between your buns. Pick your brioche or ciabatta base, add a burger comprised of beef, chicken, fish or veggies, top it with anything from roast pumpkin to spiced gherkin, slap on some cheese, slather on a sauce, and make a one-of-a-kind burger just for you.

Getta Burger

1396 Creek Road, Carina, QLD 4152

As independent as Aussies are, Brisbanites love to celebrate their country’s culture. We suggest you join them with the big, meaty, shamelessly sloppy burgers at Getta Burger. Getta’s founders might have been inspired by their travels through the USA, but the burgers they’re creating in Brisbane are unabashedly local. Order the Getta Chiko with a side of Filthy Fries. Your burger will arrive piled high with Australia’s most iconic snack – the Chiko Roll. The deliciously chewy eggroll is stuffed with beef and veggies (no chicken, go figure!). Getta has taken a cultural icon from the US and bested it with a cultural icon from Australia. What a mouthful.

Longboards Laidback Eatery & Bar

Q1 Resort & Spa, Hamilton Ave & Northcliffe Terrace, Surfers Paradise QLD 4217

With the Sunshine Coast to the north and the Gold Coast to the south, the beach is a natural part of local life here. At the aptly named Surfer’s Paradise you can get in touch with the Big Blue culture, a huge element of the Brisbane (and Aussie) identity. Enjoy the surfing theme at Longboards Laidback Eatery & Bar and order up a Longboard Burger. If you’re up for the challenge go ahead and try the Phat Bastard. We dare you.

DA’ Burger

876 Brunswick St, New Farm QLD 4005

In Brisbane there are always performances to catch and art galleries worthy of a drop-into. We recommend taking in a show at the Brisbane Powerhouse, a power plant turned performance center where the city showcases its contemporary arts. After the show, head to DA’ Burger. The burgers at this humble restaurant are works of art themselves, and the owners have the ingredients down to a science. To really Aussie-fy your order, try The Cure – all the usual burger goodness with the added indulgence of streaky bacon, a fried free range runny egg and beetroot relish.

The Flying Cock

388 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, QLD 4006

Fortitude Valley is a great place to experience the hip side of Brisbane. This formerly rough area has become the home of independent boutiques, hidden bars and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. We would describe The Flying Cock as stylish cocktail bar meets country diner. Enjoy a browse of the pun-tastic menu, but don’t leave without trying the Fried Chicken Burger. It comes with pickled papaya and nori mayonnaise; a reflection of the different cultures that come together in Brisbane, or just chefs getting creative? You be the judge.
