President Jokowi helps citizens of Tuban set Guinness World Record for most trees planted in 1 hour

November is Indonesia’s National Planting Month and today is National Tree Planting Day. In honor of the auspicious occasion, President Joko Widodo visited the village of Tasikharjo in Tuban, East Java and got his hands dirty in order to help the village’s residents plant an entire new forest in just one hour, breaking a world record in the process.

During the record breaking event, the president, along with about 5,500 farmers from the surrounding area, planted 38,000 teak trees and 200,000 Calliandra trees in just 60 minutes.

An observer from the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed the results of the event, breaking the previous world record for “most trees planted in one hour at a single location by a team of unlimited size”, which was last set at 223,390 by the people of Bataan in Barangay General Lim, Orion, Bataan, Philippines on June 25 of this year. That record was set by 16,080 participants (meaning Indonesians must be much more efficient tree planters).

“When we plant trees, we’re really planting prayers, planting hopes and planting our work all to create a sustainable future for future generations,” President Jokowi said in a statement released to the press today as quoted by Tribunnews

Jokowi added that planting trees was important for numerous reasons – such as preventing erosion, reduce pollution and providing vital natural resources. He said it was the responsibility of all Indonesian citizens to protect the country’s biodiversity.
