#IndoBuleTrials: Indonesians taste test European food like escargot, scotch eggs and foie gras for the 1st time

You have probably seen at least a few of those “westerners freaking out over trying exotic foreign foods for the first time” videos that are all over Youtube. Within that genre there are plenty of videos about ‘bules’ trying Indonesian food and snacks (this one from Buzzfeed is one of the better ones).

Well, we finally have the reverse – a taste test video about Indonesians trying exotic European “bule” foods – and it does not disappoint in the comedy department.

On the menu for the taste test are scotch eggs, oven baked olives, burrata cheese flown in from Italy, foie gras mousse and escargot. The tasting panel is bewildered by most of the items, with one of the ladies describing the burrata as looking like softex basah (wet sanitary pads) and several of them describing the foie gras as looking like cat poop.

They also seemed rather unimpressed with the flavors of the foods, with one of the men claiming he wouldn’t eat the olives even if he was paid their mahal price of Rp 68,000 (though we’re a little surprised they’re so shocked about the escargot, considering bekicot, or snails is served in many restaurants in Indonesia).

Now we just need the reaction video of westerners reacting to Indonesians reacting to eating western food and vice versa and complete and total cross-cultural culinary understanding will be achieved.

This #IndoBuleTrials video comes from Fix Productions, an Indonesian-based production house “that makes videos for when you’re bored as poo”. You can check out their Youtube channel for more amusing videos

H/T to journalist Erin Cook for the great find 🙂
