Woman attacked with acid while driving with window down in Bandung

A 22-year-old woman named Intan Novita became the victim of a horrific attack when two unidentified men on a motorcycle splashed her with hydrochloric acid while she was driving in Bandung.

Intan, a singer for a local band in Bandung, was driving her car in the Buah Batu district in Bandung at around 6:30 pm on Wednesday. The two men on the motorcycle drove up and stopped next to her car, which had the driver’s window down.

“In that moment, the suspect who was sitting at the back [of the motorcycle] splashed hydrochloric acid on the victim’s face. And then the suspects fled,” said West Java Police Spokesman Grand Commissioner Yusri Yunus as he recalled Intan’s testimony, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

Intan suffered acid burns on her face and parts of her body as a result. The extent of her injuries wasn’t revealed, but the police say they haven’t been able to extract more information from her as she’s still being treated at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung.

The police have not yet identified the suspects, though Intan told them that the one who splashed her with acid looked to be a middle-aged man.

A similar incident occurred in Jakarta in January of last year when then-17-year-old soap opera actress Fabioli de Oliviera was splashed with acid by two men on a motorcycle. The acid left a hole in her ear drum, as well as burning half of her face and her arm, shoulder, and thigh. The perpetrators were never caught.
