A red BMW crashed into a Honda CR-V as the latter was parking in front of the Hotel Mercury in Tamansari, West Jakarta early this morning, injuring a parking attendant.

The police say that the BMW driver, identified as 51-year-old SW, was at fault for the crash.

“When the CR-V was reverse parking with the help of a parking attendant, all of a sudden the BMW, which was going from Glodok towards Olimo, came and crashed into the CR-V and hit the parking attendant,” said Tamansari Police Chief AKBP Nasriadi, as quoted by Detik today.

“Initial interrogation results suggest that [the BMW driver] was sleepy and did not realize his car was veering to the left.”

Nasriadi said that officers did not smell alcohol on SW, though he did not say if the police had conducted a thorough test for alcohol or narcotics on SW.

Apart from the damaged cars, the only casualty from the incident was the parking attendant, who reportedly received a gash on his head and scraped his leg during the impact. He is now being treated at Husada Hospital in West Jakarta.

It’s not yet clear what charges SW will face. However, there have been numerous occasions in the past in which wealthy Indonesian drivers have gotten away with road crimes – even ones that have resulted in death – which many people believe is due to their ability to pay off officials and the victims’ families.
