23-year-old Dutch woman killed after getting hit by a train at a station in Yogyakarta

A 23-year-old Dutch woman, reported to be in Indonesia as a tourist, died this morning at the train station in Lempuyangan, Yogyakarta, after being hit by a train.

The woman, who has been identified by the initials DP, was reported to be at the station with a friend this morning waiting for a train. There are conflicting reports from witnesses as to how she got onto the tracks, but officials at the station believe there are indications she might have committed suicide.

A public relations manager for railway company PT Kereta Api named Eko Budiyanto said it appeared that DP jumped onto the tracks after an announcement was made that a train was about to arrive at the station.

“There are indications that she committed suicide by jumping and getting herself hit,” Eko said today as quoted by Detik. Eko said several people witnessed the incident and tried to help her.

It is believed the woman died instantly. Her body was taken to a local hospital for examination and police are still investigating the circumstances of her death.
