Government to shut infamous Mille’s nightclub after cop found with drugs on premises

In 2014, Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama shut down the infamous nightclub Stadium, which was widely known throughout Jakarta and much of the region as a hotbed of drugs, prostitution and all-night partying. Despite the illegal nature of its enterprise being common knowledge, Stadium managed to stay open for 14 years until a policeman died on the premises after an apparent overdose of drugs, giving Ahok the political opening to finally have the club shut down.

After the closing of Stadium, many said the closest remaining place to it in the capital was Mille’s Executive Club on Jalan Mangga Besar in North Jakarta, another nightclub known for its easy availability of drugs and staying open past the break of dawn. But the party is now over at Mille’s too, after a Tangerang policeman was caught there on Saturday morning with methamphetamines, ecstasy and heroin

The head of Jakarta’s Tourism and Culture Department, Catur Laswanto, said it was the second strike for Mille’s after another bust had taken place there earlier this year.

“Earlier in the same location in May there was a similar case. That means there is an element of [inaction on the part of the club], the penalty is we will shut them down,” Catur said on Monday as quoted by Kompas.

Catur said the nightclub’s management had been given stern warnings since the first bust earlier this year, but that this second discovery proved they had not taken action to prevent drugs from entering the premises. He said Milles operational license had already been revoked and the club would be sealed off for now.
