Morrissey demands his Jakarta concert be a meat-free zone

Britpop legend Morrissey is coming to Jakarta very soon for a concert at Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan on October 12. Mozza fans in the capital are giddy with anticipation for the former The Smiths frontman’s first return to the Jakarta since his last concert here in 2012.

Hopefully none of those fans were dreaming of chomping down on a huge hamburger or hot dog while Suedehead sings, because Morrissey has apparently ordered the concert’s organizers to make sure that his Jakarta concert be an entirely meat-free zone.

“One of the specific things [Morrissey asked] for the #MorrisseyJKT concert is that no meat products be sold in the concert area,” concert promoter KiosPLAY wrote in a statement received by Kompas yesterday.

Morrissey, who has long been a vegetarian but declared himself a vegan last year, is a staunch animal rights activist who has long campaigned against meat-eating.

This is hardly the first time the musician asked that meat not be sold anywhere on the premises at one of his concerts. When he played at the Belgian Lokerse Feesten in 2011, he got the festival organizers to not sell any meat products on the day of his performance, despite the fact that the festival is famous for its horse-meat sausages.

In addition to banning meat, Morrissey also stipulated that smoking, selfie sticks and professional cameras including Go-Pros not be allowed in the concert space.

Morrissey is playing GBK Sports Complex Senayan on Oct 12 at 7:30pm. For more info and tickets
