More than 8,000 workers to flood streets of Jakarta in protest today over minimum wage and tax amnesty

You might want to plan your journeys around Jakarta more carefully today, as more than 8,000 workers are expected to carry out protests in busy areas of the capital today.

The workers, who are registered under the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI), are scheduled to begin conducting demonstrations at 9 am.

The police are deploying more than enough officers to match the workers’ numbers in order to secure proceedings.

“We’re spreading 8,350 personnel across several spots, including the State Palace, Constitutional Court, Supreme Court, Corruption Eradication Commission, the Vice President’s Palace, Jakarta City Hall, Ministry of Manpower, the Horse Statue-Monas, and the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Awi Setiyono, as quoted by Kompas today.

As such, traffic congestion is predicted to be heavy in and around those areas. The workers are expected to carry out their protests until 6 pm.

The workers are demanding the government increase minimum wage levels and end its controversial tax amnesty drive, which has been criticized for potentially hurting the country’s anti-graft efforts and protecting tax evaders.
