Warden in hot water after being arrested while on a hot spring holiday with 17 of his inmates

The warden of Soppeng State Prison in South Sulawesi, Irpan, was recently arrested by police in the tourist area of Lejja, Soppeng – famous for its hot springs.

Irpan was not on a family trip to the the hot springs. According to police, Irpan and three of the guards from his prison were on holiday, along with 17 prisoners.

Obviously, prisoners in Indonesia are not legally allowed to go on holidays during their incarceration (unless you bribe the right people, then you can go out to watch a tennis match or whatever else you please).

It is not yet clear if the prisoners bribed Irpan for the hot spring holiday or if he’s simply the nicest, most reckless warden in history.

What is known is that police went to arrest Irpan and his holiday gang on Sunday. Police said that they found some of them soaking in hot tubs while others were in a karaoke room (perhaps singing “Jailhouse Rock”?).

“We secured them at 2:00 am. There were a few bottles of beer on the table (in the karaoke room),” Soppeng Police Chief Superintendent Dodied Aji Prasetyo told Detik today.

According to Dodied, the only thing the warden said to explain his actions is that he wanted to get “refreshed” with his prisoners.

The prisoners were returned to Soppeng State Prison and Irpan and his guards were reported to the South Sulawesi Police for further questioning. It is not yet clear what charges they will face.
