348 drivers fined during first day of odd-even traffic rule in Jakarta

The odd-even traffic rule was officially enforced in select roads in Jakarta yesterday, with a substantial number of drivers fined for violating the rule in its first day.

“In total there were 348 violators that we fined during the morning and afternoon sessions of the odd-even rule,” AKBP Budiyanto, head of the Law Enforcement Sub-Directorate at the Jakarta Traffic Police, wrote in a press release today.

The violators were broken down to 219 in the morning and 129 in the afternoon.

Budiyanto added that the violators will be fined Rp 500,000 and that their driver’s license or vehicle registration were confiscated. The documents will be returned to the violators after a court appearance and payment of the fine.

Excuses drivers gave for violating the rule yesterday ranged from claiming to forget the date to claiming to be from out of town (even though the car was registered in Jakarta).

Surely more people should know about the odd-even rule by now, and we hope that the number of violations will decrease from today onwards.

The odd-even traffic rule covers Jalan Sisingamaharaja, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, and parts of Jalan Gatot Subroto from 7am to 10am and 4:30pm to 8:30pm on weekdays. Vehicles with odd-numbered plates will be allowed to use those roads during rush hours on odd calendar dates and vice-versa.
