Jakarta government may double car parking fee to Rp 10,000 an hour

We Jakartans generally pay more than anywhere else in Indonesia for car parking, but would you be willing to pay even more for the sake of the greater good (ie. less macet)?

Increasing the parking tariff is on the Jakarta provincial government’s agenda. When speaking about the future of transportation in the capital, Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said that it is under discussion in order to get people to use public transportation more.

“It’s being studied, including which zones would [have parking fees] increased,” Djarot said today, as quoted by Detik.

Djarot said charging Rp 10,000 an hour for car parking in the city would be ideal, and that he believes people who can afford cars wouldn’t mind the price hike.

“If they really own cars, they should feel that they can afford it, so it should be okay,” he said.

Not only that, he said that the city may increase parking fees for motorcycles to Rp 5,000 an hour.

Of course, Djarot acknowledged that such a plan would have to go hand in hand  improving existing public transportation options, as well as creating new ones such as the MRT.

The current on street parking fee in Jakarta for cars is Rp 5,000 an hour. Parking fees for indoor parking facilities such as in shopping malls also usually start at Rp 5,000 an hour.
