With a current base fare of Rp 2,000, the KRL Commuterline is undoubtedly the cheapest public transportation option for long distances in the city. Luckily for commuters, it’s also set to remain among the cheapest even when its base fair is set to increase in the near future.

“There will be a [base] fare increase of Rp 1,000 for the first 25km travelled, from Rp 2,000 to Rp 3,000,” said Zulkifri, director of the Transportation Ministry’s Traffic and Trains department, as quoted by Warta Kota at a press announcement yesterday.

The fare for every subsequent 10km travelled will remain at Rp 1,000. As such, passengers will pay a minimum of Rp 3,000 for any distance travelled below 25km, with the maximum fare being Rp 13,000 from Bogor station to Maja station.

KRL Commuterline operator PT KCJ said the slight fare hike is not without its reason – they argued that it’s necessary to improve facilities and service for passengers.

“This year KCJ is gradually bringing in up to 60 trains until the end of the year. We’re also extending existing trains from 8 carriages to 12 carriages,” said PT KCJ First Director M Fadhil.

He added that PT KCJ is also upgrading safety features – such as by installing pedestrian bridges between platforms – on some of the most crowded stations like Tanah Abang and Manggarai.
