Hundreds take to the streets of Solo to protest terrorism and radicalism

Last week’s suicide attack on Solo’s police headquarters, allegedly by an assailant with ties to ISIS, left one police officer injured and many shocked that such a violent act could take place in the generally peaceful city in Central Java.

With Idul Fitri celebrations now over, citizens of Solo decided to take to the streets today to denounce the attack and loudly denounce all acts of terrorism and extremism.

According to media reports, hundreds of people from various organizations, including the College of Silat Setia Hati Teratai (PSHT) and Majelis Tafsir Alquran (MTA) joined the demonstrations along Solo’s main streets, causing traffic along Jalan Slamet Riyadi.

The event’s coordinator, Kusumo Heri, said the demonstration was done directly in response to last week’s suicide attack on the police station.

“”This is our, the citizens of Solo, reaction to that disgraceful action. And in the future, we hope there are no more acts of violence in our city,” Kusumo said today as quoted by Kompas

The president of PSHT Surakarta, Darminto, echoed Kusumo’s statements, saying, “We condemn acts of terrorism and radicalism that occurred in the city of Solo and the rest of Indonesia.”
