Indonesia whizzes past South Korea in average internet peak connection speed: report

It is not uncommon to hear people complaining about the quality of their Internet connections here in Indonesia. But according to the results of a recent technology survey, the quality of Indonesian internet connection has come in leaps and bounds in recent years and seemingly will continue to do so.

Technology firm and content delivery network Akamai just published its first quarterly “State of the Internet” report for 2016, which examines global internet speeds. Surprisingly, for IPv4 connections, Indonesia ranked third in the world for average peak connection speed with 110 Mbps, beating perennial awesome internet-speed-haver South Korea (103.6 Mbps), which came in fourth. Indonesia was only topped by Singapore (146.9 Mbps) and Hong Kong (110.3 Mbps).

Incidentally, South Korea topped the world for average connection speed with 29.0 Mbps, while Indonesia languished in 94th place with 4.5 Mbps.

What these statistics suggest is that while super fast internet connection can be found in Indonesia, it’s still not evenly spread throughout the country (much like its financial wealth). However, there’s still reason to be optimistic as the report shows that more and more Indonesians are turning to broadband for faster internet speeds, as there has been an amazing 674% increase of people with average connection speeds of 4 Mbps or more this year compared to last year.
