Customs squash Rp 76 billion worth of illegal booze with road roller

Indonesian authorities sure love to make a show of destroying booze in the lead up or during Ramadan every year.

Yesterday, the General Directorate of Customs and Excise squashed 50,222 bottles of booze with a road roller in the parking lot of their office. The booze were confiscated throughout 2016 for not having customs clearances or for having fake ones.

“Up to now, customs has caught an illegal alcohol factory in Bekasi, prevented the import of 6 containers of illegal alcohol in Tanjung Priok, and destroyed these 50,222 bottles,” said Heru Pambudi, director of the General Directorate of Customs and Excise, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

According to customs officials, all of those bottles amounted to 391 liters or Rp 76 billion worth of booze.

Heru added that he predicts the directorate would find and confiscate more booze this year compared to 2015, when they only destroyed Rp 97.2 billion worth of alcohol all year long.
