Bogor Police arrest 31 Chinese citizens for in latest cybercrime bust

There’s something about Indonesia that makes it a particularly popular place for Chinese cybercriminals to set up shop. Following several major busts last year in Jakarta, police in Bogor recently apprehended 31 Chinese citizens for committing fraud over the Internet.

“The results of the investigation show that they came to Indonesia on an individual basis beginning in April 2016 and are accused of committing crimes with the modus operandi of transnational online fraud with the victims being Chinese or Chinese nationals,” Bogor Police Senior Commissioner Andi Herindra told Detik today.

The police say they worked with immigration to apprehend  the Chinese citizens, who were living and working out of a luxurious house in Bogor.

Authorities did not describe the exact nature of their crimes but said they used special equipment that made the phone calls they made to victims difficult to trace.

After previous similar busts, police explained that Chinese cyber criminals often scammed victims by telling them they had won a contest and needed to pay a fee to claim their prize, or they were about to have their bank accounts frozen due to embezzlement, in order to get them to send money into their accounts.
