GrabBike and traditional ojek drivers clash over passenger in Bekasi Regency

It seemed like the clashes between traditional ojek motorcycle taxi drivers and those of motorcycle hailing app companies like Go-Jek and GrabBike were a thing of the past. However, another such incident took place in Bekasi Regency just yesterday.

Dozens of GrabBike and traditional ojek drivers got in a heated argument near the Metland housing complex, an argument police say was caused by a common ojek dispute.

“The problem was they were fighting over a passenger. A traditional ojek driver didn’t appreciate that a GrabBike driver picked up a passenger at the location, and a war of words ensued,” said AKP Endang Longla, Spokesperson for the Bekasi Police, as quoted by Vivanews yesterday.

Dozens of drivers from both sides soon joined the argument. Luckily, police officers arrived at the scene before things got violent.

Mediated by the police, the two sides then signed an agreement that allows GrabBike drivers to drop off passengers at Metland, on condition that they aren’t allowed to pick up passengers from the housing complex.

It seems like the residents of Metland are the ones who are losing out on a convenient mode of transport just because a bunch of ojek drivers stationed there are refusing to get with the times.
