A 14 year-old girl, identified by her initial M, was allegedly raped by eight men in the Tanjung Duren district of West Jakarta early Saturday morning.
The police have arrested four of the men, three of them aged 20 and one aged 24, suspected of raping M. However, the police believe there may be additional suspects.
“We have arrested four, we’re pursuing four others,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Awi Setiyono, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.
According to Awi, the incident occurred at around 1am on Saturday. M went to the Sekretaris dam in Tanjung Duren intending to meet up with her boyfriend. But her boyfriend wasn’t there to meet her, and she instead met up with one of the suspects, who took her to a location near the dam where 7 other men were waiting and raped her.
The men then left M alone after they raped her. M eventually found an ojek motorcycle taxi driver who took her to the West Jakarta Metro Police to report the incident.
The police are still investigating the case further.
The government recently introduced tougher punishments on child molesters, including the death penalty and chemical castration, after pressure from activists and the public to help prevent sexual assaults.
