Tangerang to close all forms of nightlife entertainment, ban sale of alcohol throughout Ramadan

Every year in the lead up of Ramadan, it becomes apparent which regions are more tolerant towards minorities who aren’t Muslim and which are less so. While some, like Jakarta, are relatively considerate of all religions during Ramadan, others, like the Tangerang Regency, are rather more conservatively stringent.

Tangerang Regent Zaki Iskandar announced that the satellite city is going to close all forms of nightlife entertainment, including bars and nightclubs, as well as massage parlours during Ramadan to respect Muslims who want to focus on religious worship.

“Maybe at the end of the month we’ll release a circular [putting the regional decree into effect]. So when Ramadan starts, all entertainment business owners will have closed their businesses,” he said, as quoted by Okezone today.

Zaki added that the opening hours of restaurants and other forms of eateries will also be regulated to respect Muslims who have to abstain from food and drinks during the day.

“In addition, we’re also stopping the circulation of alcohol in the fasting month,” he said.
