The glamorous Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place in Cannes, France, and Indonesian filmmakers are there to represent. In addition to shopping Indonesian films to the international market and looking for production partners, local filmmakers are also getting their chance to show their stuff on Cannes’ silver screens.
One of those filmmakers is Jakarta Institute of the Arts graduate Wregas Bhanuteja, whose short film “Prenjak: In the Year of the Monkey” (trailer above) was selected to show at the La Semaine de la Critique (Critic’s Week) sidebar competition.
Not only was his film screened, Wregas ended up winning the Leica Cine Discovery Prize, awarded to the most talented newcomers and creative voices in film.
Judging from the trailer, “Prenjak”, which is set in Yogyakarta, looks like a surprisingly risque film from an Indonesian director. One of the competition’s judges, Marie-Pauline Mollaret, praised the film by saying “Bhanuteja banishes sordid voyeurism to the benefit of tender and humorous poetry.”
