West Borneo locals kill macaques, shove cigarettes into their mouth and nose before posting photos on Facebook

We can only shake our heads and wonder how sick somebody would have to be to treat innocent animals in such a despicable manner – even after the animals were dead – and think it was funny.

Last week, a person who went by the name Rama Dhan on Facebook posted several photos of some men from Sambas Regency in West Borneo who appeared to have recently killed a couple of macaques. Not content with just simply killing the animals, they shoved cigarettes into the macaques’ nose and mouth, presumably so that the caption “even macaques know how to smoke” could accompany the photos.

While the photos have gone viral, the vast majority netizens who commented on them denounced the men’s actions and expressed their anger at the show of animal cruelty.

According to Mongabay Indonesia, the social media attention has also gotten the poster – identified by his real name as Abdul – into trouble with the West Borneo Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). However, he only received a stern warning for uploading the photos and will not be facing criminal charges for animal cruelty because it can’t be proven that he actually killed the macaques.

This is sadly hardly the first time images of animal cruelty have surfaced on social media in Indonesia. These are just a few of the cases we have reported on from the past couple of years:
