Train crashes into car on gate-less railway crossing, passengers miraculously all survive

We’ve had several high-profile cases of train and road vehicle collisions on railway crossings, the last major one occurring in Bintaro in December 2013. Even so, the government does not seem to see any reason to fix or improve railway infrastructure, particularly in regards to railway crossings, as evidenced by this most recent incident.

Yesterday morning, 25-year-old Omar Maryana was driving in Serpong with four passengers on board, including an 8-year-old girl. As he was driving the car through a railway crossing on Jalan H. Sukur in Serpong, a train went past at the same time and crashed into the front of the car.

Fortunately, everyone in the car survived.

“There were no deceased victims, the victims only received light injuries,” said South Tangerang Police Spokesperson AKP Mansuri, as quoted by Okezone.

Okezone noted that this particular railway crossing did not have crossing gates to prevent road vehicles from crossing the railway when a train is passing.

The police are still investigating the case. We just hope that, in the meantime, someone in charge will finally realize the importance of improving the safety standards of railway crossings in the capital. The next time an accident like this occurs, the passengers may not be so lucky.
