Members of international drug ring busted trying to hide meth in chocolate balls

Nine members of an international drug ring, with connections to China, the Netherlands, Malaysia and Indonesia, were arrested during a police operation over the last three weeks.

Four of the members were foreigners – one each from Iran, China, Malaysia and Nigeria. The other five were Indonesian citizens.

The Jakarta Police’s Narcotics Directorate said they had uncovered several different methods used by the criminals to import crystal methamphetamines, known locally as sabu, into Indonesia.

One of those methods was to hide the sabu in balls of chocolate – specifically packages of the popular Ferrero Rocher brand of confections.

“This is new, the packaging is chocolate but the filling is sabu. All were shipped from Guangzhou, China using the shipping service Ekspedisi,” said Jakarta Police Chief Moechgiyarto as quoted by Okezone on Wednesday.

Police found 36.43 kilograms of sabu in the 44 boxes of Ferrero Rocher they seized.

Moechgiyarto said another case involved a 44.64 kg shipment of sabu in a liquid form.

The police chief said the all of the narcotics they seized during the 3-week operation was worth about Rp 202 million and he estimated that it would save “approximately 525,323 of the nation’s children”.

Under Indonesia’s strict drug laws, the offender’s could be threatened with life imprisonment or even death.
