This story is outrageous for both the allegations of pedophilia and the fact that locals are clearly not doing enough to punish the suspect.

On Tuesday evening, locals in a housing complex in Bintaro Sektor 9 apprehended fellow resident R, who was accused of molesting several boys in a local mosque.

“At first he molested kids in the mosque. And then the mosque caretakers investigated the matter. When they went to [R], he admitted it. [R] said he was wrong,” a local resident who wished to remain anonymous told Kompas yesterday.

Now in most cases, R’s confession should have been enough to have him reported to the police, or at the very least get an investigation going. But that’s not what his neighbors decided to do.

The anonymous local resident said that the residents of the housing complex only threatened legal action against R if he didn’t move out of the complex within a month. They also had R sign a document agreeing not to molest children in the neighborhood anymore.

That decision is flawed on many levels. Perhaps the housing complex residents feel that they’ll have washed their hands clean of R when he moves out, but that’s no guarantee that he won’t repeat his unspeakable actions elsewhere. And besides, in the month he has remaining in the housing complex, who’s to say he won’t simply disregard the agreement that he signed? Does another child have to fall victim to R before they do the right thing and report him to the police?
