DPR member Rachel Maryam allegedly asked embassy in France for transportation during family trip

Politicians taking advantage of their position to score perks on overseas trips is certainly nothing new and is probably standard practice in Indonesia. But it looks like people are finally catching on to the practice after a leaked official letter allegedly showed that the Bureaucratic Reforms Minister had asked the Foreign Ministry to provide accommodations and transportation for his friend’s family trip to Australia.

Today, another leaked letter of a similar nature has surfaced, implicating House of Representatives (DPR) member and former movie star Rachel Maryam. In case you’re not familiar with her, Rachel Maryam starred in several critically acclaimed Indonesian movies in the 2000s such as ‘Janji Joni’ (2005) and ‘Arisan!’ (2003). The 35-year-old became a DPR member for the Gerindra party in 2009.

And now, she may find herself facing the spotlight of controversy. The leaked letter above, which went viral on social media today, is directed to the Indonesian Embassy in Paris. It appears that Rachel requested the embassy provide her and her family of six transportation to and from the airport and train station during their vacation in France from March 20-24.

The Foreign Ministry has been notified of the leak and is investigating into the authenticity of the letter.

“I’m still looking for information if the Foreign Ministry is going to act and if [the embassy in] Paris ever received the letter,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir, as quoted by Vivanews this afternoon.
