Lion Air and sister airlines finally land their IATA safety certifications

We never thought we’d see the day we’d report on Lion Air positively.

Lion Air has, more often than not, been negatively reported on by the media for its constant flight delays and poor service. Some of us were probably wary of flying with Lion Air, or its sister airlines Batik Air and Wings Air, after they were all featured in AirlineRatings.com’s 10 least safe airlines in the world.

Part of the reason the airlines showed up on that unenviable list was because they didn’t possess safety certifications from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which was something they recently put right.

“Lion Air has officially obtained the Operational Safety Audit certification from IATA (IOSA). This shows that in terms of safety operations, we are now up to standard,” said Lion Air General Director Edward Sirait, as quoted by Kompas today.

All of the airlines under the Lion Group, which includes Lion Air, Batik Air, Wings Air, Malindo Air, and Thai Lion Air, obtained IOSA certification as well as the IATA Standard Safety Assessment (ISSA) certification.

Edward said the airlines were assessed for 6 to 9 months on crucial aspects of airplane maintenance, operational safety, and, oddly, flight departures.

We say odd because most people know by now that Lion Air is notorious for flight delays.

In any case, we congratulate the Lion Group for their IATA certifications and we hope that they have raised their consumer standards enough to justify obtaining them.
