Netizens criticize cops who mixed up no parking and no stop signs in viral video from cop TV show

It goes without saying that traffic police officers must have a concrete understanding of traffic laws before handing out tickets to offenders. But what if they don’t?

Well, the officers in the video above clearly got it wrong, and, to make things even more embarrassing for them, they were filmed for an episode of Net TV’s cop TV show ‘86’.

The incident supposedly took place in Tamansari, West Jakarta. The whole video is essentially a back-and-forth argument between the police officers and the taxi driver, with the officers keen on ticketing the driver for illegally parking his car while the taxi driver defends himself by saying that he didn’t technically park his car as his engine was still switched on and that he was still in the car.

Yep, you guessed it. The taxi driver was right on this occasion.

The Traffic and Road Vehicles Law states that parking is “a state where the vehicle is stationary or not moving and the driver is out of the vehicle”. Meanwhile, a stopped vehicle is “a state where the vehicle is temporarily stationary and the driver is in the vehicle”.

The video clearly shows that the taxi driver stopped his car under a no parking sign, not a no stopping sign, which means that he didn’t break the law. Nevertheless, the police officers believed they were right and still ticketed the driver despite his sound argument and desperate pleas at the end.

This video recently went viral as netizens denounced the stubborn yet mistaken cops. While the taxi driver must have been inconvenienced by having to appear in court to answer for his ‘violation’, we hope he won’t have to pay a fine just because of a couple of ignorant police officers.
