IT Ministry says it will regulate, not block, Netflix in Indonesia

Will they or won’t they? Many of us have probably been wondering whether the government would block Netflix after it was made available here last week.

As expected, the Indonesian Censorship Agency (LSF) recommended to the government that Netflix be blocked in Indonesia on the grounds that the company hadn’t obtained censorship approval for its contents from LSF.

But the good news is that, today, Minister of Communications and Information Rudiantara said that the government won’t block Netflix, although it does have plans to regulate the service’s contents.

“Netflix will be contained on the regulation side of things, [it won’t be blocked] because it’s important to the public,” Rudiantara said, as quoted by Kompas.

Rudiantara explained that the ministry wants Netflix to “control” its contents so that children don’t end up watching adult content.

Er, as we already mentioned before, and as many Netflix users should be aware of, Netflix comes with a parental control feature. In that case, the ministry should have nothing to worry about.

So can the government please once and for all say they won’t touch Netflix so that we can have the peace of mind to buy our memberships without having to worry about it getting blocked in the future?
