Indonesian students spend twice as long studying math than most other countries, still perform worse

We feel really sorry for Indonesian kids who have no aptitude for math (we know exactly how they feel), especially since the Indonesian education system seems to put a big emphasis on math over other subjects.

Even our Education Ministry says that Indonesian students spend more time studying math than students from other countries.

“[The average] duration of math class is 90 minutes in Indonesia,” said Supriyatno, head of Curriculum and Textbooks Center at the Education Ministry, as quoted by Okezone today.

That is double the average 45 minute long math classes that students in countries like Finland and Singapore (which both consistently rank among the top in math testing) have to take.

Despite the extra time spent on the subject, Supriyatno said that most Indonesian students fared worse in math compared to students in other countries. So the ministry is set to make adjustments to the syllabus.

Duh, you don’t need math to figure out that 90 minutes of studying math non-stop equals 1 fried brain.
