Survey: 9 Indonesian airlines included in list of 10 “least safe” airlines in the world

In light of several aviation disasters in Indonesia last year, as well as recent scandals like airline crewmembers taking drugs, it’s safe to say that aviation safety standards in the country don’t rank among the world’s best.

In fact, according to the latest survey from AirlineRatings.com, Indonesian airlines are among the least safe in the world.

Out of the 10 airlines the website awarded a one-star safety rating (the worst rating possible), 9 of them operate in Indonesia. They are (in alphabetical order):

1. Batik Air
2. Bluewing Airlines
3. Citilink
4. Kal-Star Aviation
5. Lion Air
6. Sriwijaya Air
7. TransNusa
8. Trigana Air Service
9. Wings Air
10. Xpress Air

Only Bluewing Airlines does not fly in Indonesia. Three of the above – Batik Air, Lion Air, and Wings Air – all belong to the Lion Group. Citilink operates under Garuda Indonesia while a couple others, like Trigana and Xpress, mainly fly to the eastern parts of Indonesia.

AirlineRatings surveyed the safety ratings of 407 airlines from all over the world, giving them a rating from one star to seven. The ratings take multiple factors into account, including whether an airline has been certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), its crash record and whether its fleet has ever been grounded over safety concerns.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, no Indonesian airline was named among the 20 safest in the world. Australia’s flagship Qantas secured the top spot for the third year running.

This is indeed not great news for the nation’s already embattled aviation industry. Would you still fly with any of the airlines in the list above? Or do you think there are even worse airlines that didn’t make the list?
