National Geographic names Indonesian photographer’s orangutan shot one of the best photos of 2015

As the world’s premier showcase for nature photography, getting chosen to have your work shown in National Geographic is one of the greatest honors a photographer can receive. But having one of your photos chosen by National Geographic as one of the very best photos of the year is an accomplishment only a handful photographers can boast about.

One of those photographers is Andrew Suryono, whose above shot, “Orangutan in the Rain” earned an Honorable Mention in National Geographics 2015 Photo Contest.

In describing the photo for the contest, Andrew wrote, “I was taking photos of orangutans in Bali, Indonesia, when it started to rain. Just before I put my camera away, I saw this orangutan take a taro leaf and put it on top on his head to protect himself from the rain! I immediately used my DSLR and telephoto lens to preserve this spontaneous magic moment.”

The National Geographic Photo Contest is open to both amateur professional photographers and received over 13,000 entries in 2015. Andrew’s amazing photo got its honorable mention in the contest’s “Nature” category, coming in just behind the contest’s grand prize winner, James Smart, whose photo of a tornado in Colorado earned him $10,000 dollars.

Congratulations to Andrew on his amazing photo! You can check out more of his National Geographic photos here. You can also download a high-res versions of “Orangutan in the Rain”, suitable for desktop, tablet and mobile wallpaper, right here.
