Seven dead in Depok due to tainted alcohol

In yet another illustration of the heavy cost Indonesia must pay for its heavy restrictions on legal alcohol, at least seven people in Depok have died recently after drinking illegal tainted alcohol.

More fatalities could be coming, as police first reported three and then five deaths due to alcohol poisoning in the areas of Beji and Pancoranmas in Depok, before two more were added to the death toll today.

Kampung Lio Neighborhood Head K. Habib Algadri said that the victims’ families wanted to get revenge on the sellers of the tainted alcohol.

“It’s not just residents of Pancoranmas, those in Beji have also become victims, for a total of seven. If not detained by other citizens, the victim’s families would have already attacked the alcohol sellers,” he said as quoted by Okezone.

The case is still under investigation by the Depok Police Criminal Investigation Unit, who are checking on alcohol sellers in the area.
