Ahok angered over Uber’s claim that he gave them green light to operate legally in Jakarta

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has categorically denied that he ever gave the green light for ride-hailing app Uber to operate legally in Jakarta.

“I must clarify: Uber, until today, is still illegal!” Ahok said at City Hall yesterday, as quoted by BeritaSatu.

Ahok said he was upset that Uber claimed to have his backing in a recent press release saying that the company could finally operate legally in the capital after facing numerous legal roadblocks.

Uber has apologized to Ahok for the press release.

According to Ahok, Uber must still meet several requirements before it can operate as a legal public transportation company in Jakarta. These include obtaining the appropriate permits and insurance, as well as placing taxi signs on their cars.

Ahok added that Jakartan authorities will continue to impound Uber cars until the company meets all the legal requirements.
