City to spend Rp 1.2 trillion to replace streetlights with cost-saving LED bulbs

Sometimes you have to spend more in order to save more in the long run.

That is the thinking behind the Jakarta provincial government’s plan to unscrew all of the city’s streetlights and replacing them with new, cost-saving LED light bulbs.

However, installing new LED lights is going to take a massive chunk of the city’s Regional Budget – Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said the project would cost Rp 1.2 trillion.

The process is expected to be completed over three years.

“We start implementing next year and all of [the streetlights in] Jakarta will be replaced,” Ahok said, as quoted by Vivanews yesterday.

Ahok explained that the government spends Rp 600 billion each year in electricity costs for the current streetlights.

With LED lights, the city can expect to save up to Rp 400 billion each year in electricity costs.
